My Priorities for Croydon & Sutton

Here are some of my priorities I would support if elected to the GLA

TACKLING CHILD POVERTY

London has one of the highest levels of child poverty in the whole of the UK, and the Tory cost of living crisis has only made this worse. I will always be campaigning to end child hunger and ensuring every child in London has the best opportunity in life. Sadiq providing universal free school meals is truly transformational but we need to fundamentally tackle the root causes of child poverty in our capital.

IMPROVING OUR GREEN SPACES

Supporting our green spaces has been something I've worked hard on through my whole political career. I have been instrumental in redeveloping my local park and the buildings within it (including raising several million over various projects). This drive is something I would love to take to City Hall.

REDEVELOPING BOTH SUTTON AND CROYDON TOWN CENTRES

District and town centres are changing, but they remain vital to the prosperity of a town and its residents. Both Croydon and Sutton need investment in their town centre. If selected I want to found ground-level organisations to push for a new vision for both our town centres.

SAFER STREETS

Sadiq has greatly improved policing numbers in London but the problems with the Metropolitan Police are many and profound. I want to support Sadiq in his effort to turn this around. Tackling crime however isn't just about police. It is about providing better opportunities. In my time as a councillor one of my proudest achievements was brokering a deal to get a new youth centre in my ward. This is an example of how we can change the future.

In Summary...

  • Tackling Child Poverty
  • Improving our Green Spaces
  • Redeveloping both Sutton and Croydon Town Centres
  • Safer Streets
  • Tackling Violence against Women and Girls
  • Climate Change
  • Improving Transport Links
  • Preserve and Improve our Hospitals
  • Supporting Arts & Culture

And much much more! But please contact me to let me know what you think my priorities should be.

TACKLING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

This is a scourge on our society. As a woman, mum and a councillor I see all the time the effects of this. I want to support Sadiq in turning this around.

CLIMATE CHANGE

There is a climate crisis. As part of the GLA I would support Sadiq in helping London transform into a low or zero carbon city. I want my children to grow up in a world where we aren't seeing climate disaster and where there is a brighter greener future. The national Labour Party's policy of GB Energy is something that we as a team should be helping to deliver. One of Croydon and Sutton's major problems is the incinerator. I have always been vocal in my opposition to it (which was agreed before I was a councillor), and if an opportunity presents itself I will support any greener alternatives.

IMPROVING TRANSPORT LINKS

The Superloop was good news especially for Sutton, but there still remains gaps in our public transport service, whether this is campaigning for the tram to be extended to Sutton or making Croydon Zone 4, to name but a couple.

PRESERVE AND IMPROVE OUR HOSPITALS

Croydon benefits very strongly from having A&E services on our doorstep, something which I have had frqeuent cause to rely on. But this is not something we should be taking for granted, and Sutton deserves equally good A&E services. I will fight to stop the contraversial relocation of these services out of St. Helier Hospital.

SUPPORTING ARTS & CULTURE

This is an area of particular passion for me, as I have strong links with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and am involved with a local theatre company. My children also have a strong interest in being involved in the theatre. The Tories always fail when it comes to Arts and Culture, look at the mess they are making of the Croydon Borough of Culture. London has a proud history of Theatre, Music and Art, and keeping this at the centre of our lives is incredibly important to me.
